The story

John Kunkel opened the first Yardbird in Miami in tribute to his grandmother’s cooking, and her fried-chicken recipe — with its famous 27-hour brine — carried the brand around the world. Dallas welcomed its own in the Park District, where the restaurant quickly became a brunch landmark and a pre-park, post-work, any-excuse kind of place.

What to order

Everyone’s first table order is the chicken ‘n’ watermelon ‘n’ waffles — sweet, salty, crunchy and made for sharing photos before sharing bites. The fried green tomato BLT with smoked pork belly and pimento cheese is the lunch move, warm biscuits are non-negotiable, and the bourbon cocktails give the meal its slow Southern rhythm. Brunch here is an event, not a meal slot.

The space

The Rockwell Group design pairs industrial openness with front-porch warmth: high ceilings and clean lines inside, wooden lattice and swing seating on the wraparound patio outside. Golden hour on those swings, cocktail in hand, is a small Dallas tradition in the making.
