History of Establishment
The history of Genesis Women’s Shelter in Dallas began in 1985. At the end of the last century, the shelter was created as an emergency refuge for women and children escaping domestic violence. At that time, many women in Dallas needed a safe place to flee from abuse. For this reason, a seven-room shelter was opened near Dallas. For safety reasons, the exact address of the shelter remains confidential to protect the women.
Just two years later, thanks to the support of local churches and community organizations, Genesis Women’s Shelter began to expand. In 1988, the shelter launched a 24-hour crisis hotline, which became one of the first in the region.
In 1995, the transitional housing program Annie’s House was founded, providing women with time and resources to adapt after leaving the shelter.
The founders of Genesis Women’s Shelter were a group of local activists and volunteers from Dallas. These women united to create a safe space for women and children suffering from domestic violence. Their goal was not only to provide emergency shelter but also to offer full support, helping survivors start their lives anew.
Genesis Women’s Shelter actively cooperates with the Texas Council on Family Violence, medical institutions, law firms, and volunteer organizations. Through joint efforts, they have built a strong center that supports women in challenging life situations.
Modern Period
As of 2025, Genesis Women’s Shelter provides a wide range of free and confidential services, including emergency shelter, crisis counseling, art therapy, legal consultations, educational programs, childcare, and social rehabilitation. Statistically, the organization has already helped more than 100,000 women and children in Dallas and its suburbs.
Genesis Women’s Shelter continues to grow and expand. For example, in 2021, Genesis became an independent nonprofit organization with its own support office in the South Oak Cliff area. In 2023, the largest center opened on Lucas Drive, equipped with modern support technologies and educational programs.
Genesis Women’s Shelter provides comprehensive support for women. If you are a victim of domestic violence, don’t be afraid and don’t suffer in silence. The center’s main services include:
• A 24-hour support hotline at 214-946-HELP (4357), where confidential assistance is available anytime;
• Temporary shelter providing safety, housing, food, and essentials for up to 56 days;
• Individual and group counseling for psychological rehabilitation;
• Legal support in family law matters;
• Transitional housing through the Annie’s House program, helping women rebuild independent lives;
• Education for children at Simmons School, located within the shelter;
• Employment assistance, transportation, and medical support.
The shelter can accommodate up to 100 women and children at a time. All services are free, confidential, and available in both English and Spanish.
